2019 Accomplishments
January 2019: Families participated in free swimming classes hosted by Casa de la Cultura, Winter hikes organized by Community Wellness Connections, Children’s Health & Nutrition Task Force provided healthy snack samples at Kennie’s during Healthy Options distribution. 130 families and 75 seniors received vouchers to spend at Kennie’s market on fruits and vegetables. Fruit and Veg bucks for SNAP recipients received 50% off their 5 highest priced fruits and vegetables at Kennie’s through April. Both programs were made possible by funding from Wellspan Health and Gettysburg Hospital Foundation.
April 2019: The Local Foods Guide of 2019-2020 was finalized and printed. This guide serves as a great resource for anyone in the community looking for ways to learn about local food resources and connect with local growers and markets.
April 2019: Children’s Health & Nutrition Task Force Members assisted the Physical Fitness Task Force (PFTF) with a special Children’s Walk at the Eisenhower National Historic Site Home and Farm. They developed a scavenger hunt for children to use when walking the area and handed out healthy snacks. Members also assisted with a separate PFTF walk later that month by hosting a make your own healthy trail mix stop at Kennie’s Market in Gettysburg.
April 2019: The Gleaning Project hosted their 6th annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser and Community Dinner. Despite the rain, over 400 community members attended and they sold out of bowls, raising $9,200 to support their work of harvesting and distributing excess produce in Adams County.
May 2019: The Adams County Food Policy Council celebrated its 10 year anniversary and members gathered to reflect on progress made and goals for the future.
May - October 2019: The Adams County Farmers Market was able to serve over 1,000 income-eligible residents during the 2019 farmers market season by facilitating 4 different food access programs: Health Options, SNAP Double Dollars, FMNP Matching, and WellSpan Market Bucks. These initiatives were made possible by partnerships with the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation and Healthy Adams County.
June 2019: Children’s Health & Nutrition Task Force members handed out materials to families with children at the special Market Day at Misty Ridge housing development.
June - October 2019: Mud College Farm participated in Adams County Farmers Market as a vendor, selling certified organic vegetable produce. They also sold wholesale to 3 restaurants and 3 farms.
August 2019: The Gleaning Project raised about $6,000 through their 3rd annual Glean-A-Mania fundraiser. Community members pledged 1 penny per pound of produce that volunteers gleaned during the week of August 17-23. The Adams County branch of The Gleaning Project harvested 13,000 lbs in only one week, and distributed that produce to 24 community partners.
September 2019: Children’s Health & Nutrition Task Force members provided information on making healthy snacks using whole grains and provided food samples at the Adams County Heritage Festival.
September - November 2019: Mud College Farm established our first Community Supported Agriculture season. We delivered shares of our organic vegetables and free range (not organic) eggs to 8 member households on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, through this time.
October 2019: Children’s Health & Nutrition Task Force members conducted a vegetable taste test at St. Francis School’s annual Health Day.
